Water Quality
Can I Use Tap Water in My Freshwater Tank?
Chlorine, chloramine, metals, and when RO water makes sense.
Tap water is fine for most freshwater tanks if you treat it with a dechlorinator that handles both chlorine and chloramine. Match temperature before adding to the tank. Some keepers also use products that bind heavy metals if local water reports show copper or iron issues.
If breeding sensitive species or keeping shrimp that react to copper, test tap water or use RO water remineralized to your target gh/kh. Straight RO without minerals is not suitable long term for most fish.
Know your local pH and hardness once — it saves guesswork when fish die after every water change. Store source water notes in ReefDiary tank settings.
