How to Read a Freshwater Master Test Kit

Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH — what the colors mean and how often to test.

Liquid test kits are more reliable than dip strips for decisions that affect livestock. Follow the wait times on the label — comparing colors too early gives false readings.

Ammonia and nitrite should be 0 in a mature tank. Nitrate often runs 5 to 40 ppm depending on plants and water changes; if it climbs above 40 ppm consistently, increase change volume or reduce feeding. pH depends on your source water and substrate; chasing a “perfect” number matters less than avoiding sudden shifts.

During cycling, test every two to three days. Once stable, weekly is enough for many tanks. ReefDiary stores each result with a date so trends are obvious — one random nitrate of 80 ppm means less than three weeks of gradual climb.
