Water Quality

pH Swings in Freshwater Aquariums

Why stability matters, common causes of drift, and when to adjust.

Fish tolerate a range of pH values better than they tolerate rapid change. A stable 7.4 beats bouncing between 6.8 and 7.8 every week. Know your tap water pH and your tank pH after it has sat overnight — gas exchange can shift readings.

Crushed coral in the filter, driftwood, and CO2 injection all pull pH in different directions. Large water changes with very different source water can shock sensitive species.

If you must adjust pH, do it slowly and test before and after changes. Log pH alongside gh/kh if you keep discus or wild-caught fish; ReefDiary charts make slow drift visible before fish show stress.
