Water Quality
How High Can Nitrate Go in a Freshwater Tank?
Safe ranges, plant-assisted uptake, and when to act.
Nitrate is the end product of the nitrogen cycle and less toxic than ammonia or nitrite, but it still stresses fish at high levels. Many keepers aim to keep nitrate under 20 to 40 ppm through weekly water changes. Breeding tanks and sensitive species do better lower.
Heavy planting, moderate feeding, and not overstocking keep nitrate in check. If nitrate stays high despite 30% weekly changes, you are adding nutrients faster than you remove them — cut food, add plants, or reduce fish load.
Test before each water change and log the number. ReefDiary trend lines show whether your current routine is enough or just barely keeping up.
