How Often Should I Change Water in a Freshwater Tank?

Typical water change schedules, how much to change, and why consistency beats perfection.

A weekly partial water change is the habit most stable tanks share. Changing 25% to 30% removes nitrate, dilutes dissolved organics, and refreshes minerals. Smaller, more frequent changes beat rare massive ones — big swings stress fish and plants.

Match the schedule to your stocking and feeding. A lightly stocked planted tank might get by with 20% every week; a heavy community tank may need 30% or twice-weekly top-offs plus a solid weekly change. Always treat tap water with a dechlorinator and match temperature within a few degrees.

Use ReefDiary to schedule water changes and log nitrate before and after. Over time you will see how fast nitrate climbs and can adjust volume or frequency instead of guessing.
