Plants & Algae

Planted Tank Basics for Beginners

Easy plants, light duration, and why plants help stability.

Live plants are not mandatory, but hardy species like Java fern, Anubias, and cryptocoryne make tanks look natural and use nitrate. Attach rhizome plants to wood or rock — burying the rhizome often causes rot.

Start with eight to ten hours of light on a timer. Too much light plus excess nutrients equals algae on glass and leaves. Root tabs or a gentle liquid fertilizer help heavy feeders; shrimp-only tanks may need less.

Plant melt in the first month is common when plants adjust to new water. Trim dead leaves and be patient. Track light hours and nitrate in ReefDiary if algae becomes a weekly chore.
